PU team begins digging archaeological mound

TOBA TEK SINGH, July 22: A study group of the Punjab University Archaeology Department (PUAD) on Tuesday started digging a mound (Tibba Sungal) near Chak 742-GB, some 40 kilometres away from here, to trace remains of a civilisation that existed nearly 400 years before Christ.

The 65-foot high mound is erected on a chunk of land measuring around 10 acres near river Ravi.

Kamalia MNA Riaz Fatyana, who was also present at the site, told Dawn by telephone that some farmers had handed him over some old pots recovered from the mound a few years ago.He said he had sent those pots to the archaeology department in Multan for research, which had indicated that the pots were of 400 years before Christ period.

He said he had sent a memorandum to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat pointing out that some grabbers were trying to encroach upon the state land and ruin the national cultural heritage.

The PUAD was directed to dig the area on which a 35-member team, including 13 girls, started digging on Tuesday.

Led by PUAD head Dr Farzand Maseeh, the team recovered during Tuesday's first digging a clay lamp (chiragh), clay armbands and some pots.

Harappa Museum in-charge Muhammad Hussain was also present at the site. He said that he had written to officials concerned to approve a grant of Rs1 million for the purpose but to no avail.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Tibba Sungal site is just 30 kilometers away from Harappa (Sahiwal).

The PU team has proposed that first encroachments should be removed from the mound so that a large-scale research work could be carried out expeditiously.

The team experts have also suggested that Unesco should be requested to hold a seminar to ascertain the historical status of Kamalia.
