Six years after he played his last Test, Pragyan Ojha brought the curtain down on his 13-year-old career by retiring from international and firstclass cricket “with immediate effect”.

Thirtythree years could be termed too early to call it quits but Ojha, who last season played for Bihar, seems keen on moving on with life.

“I think it is too early for him to have retired but it’s a personal decision. I have fond memories of him playing for Deccan Chargers,” said former India player Y Venugopal Rao on Friday. “Maybe he is a better judge for himself but I think he still had a couple of years to go on.”

“I would wish him all the luck in his future endeavours and hope he will help future cricketers by sharing his experience and making them better players,” said former Hyderabad off-spinner Kawaljeet Singh. Ojha had thanked Kawal for “helping him early on”.

After he had to remodel his action in 2015, life hadn’t been the same for Ojha. His hopes of making a comeback never realised despite his move to Bengal. The 33-year-old former leftarm spinner had made his debut for Hyderabad against Railways in 2005. He later turned out for Bengal and Bihar. He took 404 first-class wickets.
