Born in a far mer’s family in Sangli district in 1935, Andalkar left the village at the age of 15 and came to Kolhapur to learn wrestling. He trained at the Motibaug Talim, one of the oldest wrestling clubs of the city.

In 1960, he won the coveted ‘Hind Kesari’ championship and never looked back. Two years later, he achieved a rare feat of winning the gold and silver medals in two different wrestling styles (freestyle and Greco Roman in 97 kg) at the 1962 Asian Games at Jakarta. He led the wrestlers contingent for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He was conferred with the Arjuna Award in the same year.
