		+	Khatta Singh said that once Gurmeet took over as the Dera chief, he wanted Fakir Chand to give him all the details about the wealth the Dera had accumulated over the years. When Fakir Chand refused to do so, saying that the money was strictly for the welfare of the Dera premis, he was taken to the torture room and imprisoned there for a few days.
		+	He was given no food and was beaten up from time to time. Those ‘taking care’ of Fakir Chand included a former driver, Gobind Singh, Baldev Singh Bahedi, Sukhdev Singh Bawana and a sadhvi, Resham.

		+	Fakir Chand was shifted to a farmhouse about 7 km away, on the road leading to Phoolkan village. Here too, he was beaten up and further interrogated. Once he divulged the details, the plan was to murder him in three days’ time. But Fakir Chand sustained a fatal injury while being tortured at the farmhouse and died. According to Khatta, on the directions of the Dera chief, the accused burnt the hair off Fakir Chand’s dead body and threw it into a canal near the farmhouse.

Ranjit’s and Chhatrapati’s were the two murders that the CBI was probing. Fakir Chand was not even on their radar. Little did we know that Khatta was about to tell us about another murder, which perhaps no one outside the Dera, and very few inside it, were aware of…
		+	Khatta claimed that Lakshaman Das was murdered because he refused to acknowledge Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s authority. A rumour was spread that he had committed suicide by consuming poison because he was mentally disturbed…

		+	He next told us about a room in the new Dera premises where sadhvis who refused to go to the gufa or who tried to escape the Dera were confined and tortured. A sadhvi from Bathinda had fractured her spine when she was beaten up mercilessly by Gurmeet’s henchmen.

		+	Apparently, the sadhvi had been called to the gufa and raped by Gurmeet Ram Rahim. When she went back to the girls’ hostel, she was in extreme pain and confided in another sadhvi. Unfortunately, said Khatta, the sadhvi she confided in was one of the many moles Gurmeet had planted inside the girls’ hostel.

		+	Next day, the sadhvi was summoned to the torture chamber and brutally beaten with belts and canes by four men. When she was dragged out of the room, she was bleeding profusely and Khatta later learnt that her spine had been badly damaged. Her parents were summoned to the Dera and the sadhvi was handed over to them…

		+	Not only the sadhvis but the sadhus too, if they rebelled against the Dera chief’s authority, or were found saying anything against him, would be subjected to the same treatment. It was difficult to keep anything from Gurmeet because of his spy system. Khatta said that for every four disciples, one would be selected to snitch on the other three. No one knew who these spies were who would report to the baba’s henchmen. There was a general sense of distrust among the disciples and this was the reason why despite their sufferings, they would keep everything to themselves.

		+	Khatta said, ‘Dera mein kaun apna hain kaun paraya, pata karna bahut mushkil ka kaam tha.’ (It was very difficult to find out whom you could trust and whom you couldn’t at the Dera.) He said that the penalty for speaking against either Dera Sacha Sauda or its chief was severe. The price of rebellion was torture, if you were lucky and murder if you weren’t. In some cases, if a sadhu wanted to leave the Dera, he was allowed to. He would be followed by the Dera’s henchmen and a few miles away, scores would be settled. In some cases, he claimed the deserter was beaten up and in some cases, he was simply murdered…

		+	For every kind of criminal activity, the Dera chief had devised a system of code words. The meanings of these code words were known only to ten to fifteen close confidants. For instance, the person assigned to summon a sadhvi to the gufa would say she had been called for Pitaji ki maafi (Father’s forgiveness).

		+	The sadhvis all knew that if a particular sadhvi had been given maafi by Pitaji, she had been through the same horror they had been subjected to earlier. Kanta nikaal dena (remove the thorn) was the code used when the Dera chief had decided that someone needed to be murdered, probably because he had become a ‘thorn’ in his side, like what happened with Ranjit Singh. When a murder was executed by mowing down someone, usually a deserter, with a vehicle, the code used was ‘isse farmhouse bhej diya’ (he has been sent to the farmhouse).

		+	Khatta said that while driving the Dera chief, whenever he heard the words ‘isse farmhouse bhej diya’, he would shiver at the thought that one more person had been murdered. When asked why the sadhvis did not try harder to escape the Dera or expose their exploitation by the Dera chief, Khatta grew pensive. Iska itna mayajaal faila hai Dera premiyon mein ki maa–baap bhee apni ladkiyon ki nahi sunte. (He has created such an aura around himself that even parents don’t listen to their daughters.)..

		+	He told us about a 17-year-old sadhvi who managed to scale the wall of the girls’ hostel and escape the Dera. When she reached home and told her parents about the Dera chief molesting her, her parents refused to believe her. Uske maa–baap nein bola ki TV, picture dekhne ko nahi milta hoga isliye tu bhag aayi hain. Tera hi character kharab hoga. Pitaji kuch galat nahi kar sakte. (Her parents told her that she had probably escaped from the Dera as she was not allowed to watch TV and movies there. She must have done something wrong. Pitaji can’t do anything bad.)

		+	Khatta proceeded to make a shocking revelation. He told us that Gurmeet had till then castrated more than three hundred sadhus living at the Dera. Some had left and a few had been murdered. He told us about a boy who was killed after he protested his castration at the Dera. He was once a close aide of Gurmeet and the Dera chief feared that he might leave the Dera and expose him. According to Khatta, Gurmeet castrated followers close to him to ensure their loyalty. The castrations, according to Khatta, were conducted at a 400-bed super-speciality hospital owned by the Dera in Sirsa.

		+	Chandigarh : The Haryana government has granted another 30-day parole to jailed Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is serving sentences in two rape cases and life imprisonment in two separate murder cases. This marks his fifth parole in 17 months, and the second this year.

		+	His parole history includes previous releases for 21 days in February 2022, 30 days in June 2022, 40 days in October 2022, and 40 days in January this year. 		+	CHANDIGARH: Haryana suffered losses worth Rs 126 crore during the violence+ that had erupted after Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim was convicted of rape by the special CBI court on August 25, 2017, at Panchkula.

		+	The loss includes damage to public and private property, revenue loss to various departments and expenses incurred on security.
		+	According to the revised gist of claims and losses incurred during the violence the state has suffered a loss of Rs 1,26,68,71,700 in all the districts. Ambala suffered the maximum loss of Rs 46.84 crore among violence-hit districts.

		+	Fatehabad came in second with Rs 14.87 crore losses because of revenue loss and money spent on resources used to control the situation.

		+	''Panchkula suffered maximum damage ''

		+	There was no damage to public or private property in Fatehabad. Another district, Sirsa, which houses the dera headquarters, suffered Rs 13.57 crore loss. The epicentre of violence, Panchkula, which witnessed maximum violence and led to the killing of 36 people in police firing, suffered losses worth Rs 10.57 crore.

		+	Some of the districts, including Hisar, Jhajjar, Rewari, Narnaul (Mohindergarh), Palwal, Jind, Nuh and Yamunanagar, did not suffer any losses.

		+	The details have been submitted by the Haryana advocate general to the Punjab and Haryana high court, which is hearing a matter related to the violence. The details have been submitted to the court by in the wake of an on-going petition filed by advocate Ravinder Singh Dhull.

		+	On the basis of this petition, the court had issued several directions regarding maintenance of law and order in Punjab and Haryana ahead of Gurmeet's rape conviction.
