		+	NEW DELHI: Given its history as a residential area for armed forces personnel, it is perhaps appropriate that Defence Colony will get on Friday a first-of-its-kind memorial to military martyrs, laudable in the context of the long wait for a post-Independence national war monument in the country. A curved wall of black granite, prominently located at Veer Bhumi Chowk, will have the names of 98 patriots inscribed on it.After a gruelling process lasting a year and a half, a committee led by 78-year-old Major Jasbir Singh (retd) shortlisted 98 names for the wall. Of them, 35 are of gallantry award winners. “The others have been recognised for exceptional service by the government,” explained the retired officer. The ‘wall of honour’ will be inaugurated on Friday evening by Delhi lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung and former chief of army staff General VP Malik.

I thought, why not have such an arrangement here?”The commemorative wall will have the names of some of the finest soldiers the country has produced, including Ashok Chakra awardee Lt Puneet Nath Dutt, the 11 Gorkha Rifles officer who died battling terrorists in 1997 when just 24 years old. His mother, Anita Dutt, described the wall as a “much needed initiative”. “The colony’s younger generation and visitors can learn about the illustrious past and sacrifices of this place,” she said.Another honoree is Mahavir Chakra awardee Brigadier Joginder Singh Bakshi, who captured Bogra district in what was then East Pakistan in 1971. His son, Jaswinder Singh Bakshi, said the monument would remind the residents about how and why Defence Colony was set up by the defence people for the defence people. Defence Colony was planned as a residential area for servicemen arriving from Pakistan after Partition. Over time, the demographics changed, making it imperative for current residents to remember how the colony was founded. “This structure will help in preserving the original ‘spirit of the area’,” reassured Vayusena Medal winner Group Captain HS Bedi. “Hopefully, it will motivate a few youngsters to take up the call to serve the country.” Major Singh also said that the monument would be a live one, with names of martyrs being inducted for inscription on the wall at regular intervals. A panel with space enough for 200 names has been left empty for this purpose. Built at a cost of Rs 2.21 lakh with funds provided by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, the commemorative structure, according to Abhishek Dutt, has “no political overtones whatsoever” and only recognises “the contribution of our brave soldiers”.

-The Dwarka-Palam flyover, which was described on Friday by additional sessions judge Kamini Lau as one of the “deadliest accidents spots“ in Delhi, has seen 30 mishaps this year alone with five fatalities, according to police records.The court's view that its “faulty“ design will continue to lead to accidents is backed by statistics that show around 90 road accidents have occurred on this stretch in the last three years.

		+	Lotanji Ke Chhole Kulche has been feeding schoolkids and adults for nearly 100 years now. Men patiently await their turn around a table on a street in Daryaganj for a drink served in a plastic glass with a cube of butter.

		+	These glasses soon get filled with chhole ka paani -made from the water in which chickpeas are soaked for over 10 hours, and boiled with garam masala.An inter minable stream of customers keeps the fourth generation sellers of Lotanji Ke Chhole Kulche busy from morning till noon.
		+	Lotan started selling chhole, kulche and chhole ka paani on the pavement of a Chawri Bazar bylane in the 1920s. His great-grandson, Mahaveer, 40, continues this tradition every morning at the same spot. His clients are mostly residents.
		+	At 10am, the action shifts to Daryaganj. Here Mahaveer's younger brother, Deepak, sets up a table right behind Commercial Senior Secondary School, which once housed Lady Shri Ram College for Women. The school and the Lotans have a long connect. “They have been serving chhole kulche to kids in the school's courtyard since the late `50s,“ says former principal IC Ahuja. He adds that Lotan started the business as a noble endeavour -to feed kids during recess on a nonprofit basis.

		+	Now, it is Deepak who sells chhole and kulcha for Rs 10 to the schoolchildren during recess. The same combo costs Rs 25 outside. Physi cal education teacher Rajneesh Gautam, 43, says that he used to relish Lotan's chhole-kulche, in the early '80s, as a student in the same school.
		+	Once recess ends, Deepak moves back to the table outside the school. He scoops out chhole from a copper vessel, tops it with aloo and masala -the red spicy concoction with a choice of less, medium or at-your-own-risk! Then follows a spoonful of amchur chutney, a sprinkle of garam masala and a garnish of dhaniya and ginger. Placed alongside a plate of kulche, sourced from a baker in Dariba, the combo is snapped up by eager hands looking for a quick lunch in this publishing hub.
