2011: Sehajdhari Sikhs get their voting rights back

[ From the archives of the Times of India]

The Punjab and Haryana HC restored the voting rights to Sehajdharis by quashing a 2003 notification of the Centre, causing ripples in the political waters of the state barely a month ahead of assembly elections. The court, however, made it clear that it would not express any views as to who constitutes a ‘Sikh’ or whether a ‘Sehajdhari Sikh’— who trims or shaves his beard — can also be a ‘Sikh.’ This decision came as a jolt to the ShiromaniGurdwaraPrabandhak Committee, whose fate now hangs in balance.
