Paung

Township in the Thaton District of Lower Burma, lying between 16 28' and 16 52' N. and 97 14' and 97 36' E., with an area of 353 square miles. It is bounded on the north by the Thaton township ; on the east and south by the Donthami and Salween rivers ; and on the west by the Gulf of Martaban. The township is fertile and thickly populated. The population was 46,332 in 1891, and 55,071 in 1901, inhabiting 142 villages. The head-quarters are at Paung, a village of 1,651 inhabitants, on the western slopes of the Martaban hills, which run north and south through the centre of the township. The ancient site of Martaban lies at its south-eastern corner on the Salween, opposite the port of Moulmein. The area cultivated in 1903-4 was 224 square miles, paying Rs. 3,23,600 land revenue.
