Madhubani Town

Head-quarters of the subdivision of the same name in Darbhanga District, Bengal, situated in 26° 21' N. and 86° 5' E., about 16 miles north-east of Darbhanga town. Population (1901), 17,802. Madhubani is an important trading centre on the road from Sakri station on the J3engal and North-Western Railway to the Nepal fiontier. It was constituted a municipalily in i86g. The income during the decade ending 1901-2 averaged Rs. 16,000, and the expenditure Rs. 12,000. In 1903-4 the income was Rs. 18,000, mainly derived from a tax on persons (or property tax) and the receipts from municipal markets : and the expenditure was Rs. 16,000. The town contains the usual public offices ; the sub-jail has accommodation for 14 prisoners.
