Off-campus exams for sportspersons

2019

Ramendra Singh, Nov 26, 2019: The Times of India

A Gujarat university has worked out a novel solution to help its athletes missing exams due to participation in sports events. It has sent its exam controller to Bhopal so that four of its students, who have come here for a chess championship, can take their papers at Barkatullah University.

Gandhinagar-based Indian Institute of Teachers Education (IITE) — a government university whose foundation was laid by Narendra Modi when he was Gujarat CM — says it will now conduct exams for sportspersons wherever a tournament is held so that they don’t suffer academically.

The first of these off-campus tests was held in Bhopal on Monday for IITE students Riddhi Parmar, Komal Mecwan, Hansa Parmar and Krishna Parmar, who are here for the West Zone Inter-University Chess Championship.

IITE deputy registrar Vimal Shah, who is also the head of examination, told TOI that athletes very often have to choose between academics and sports, and the dilemma grows when exam dates clash with tournaments. So, the university decided to think out of the box in this instance.
